Jeanne-Mance Park Festival

The 6th and 7th of July 2024, 12 to 8pm

After the parade on St -Laurent Boulvard, the celebrations of Festival of India continue all weekend at the Jeanne-Mance Park (corner of Parc Avenue and Mont-Royal Avenue). Participants will be offered a free traditional Indian vegetarian meal and a host of other family activities, including:

  • Acclaimed traditional music, dance & drama performances
  • A south Asian bazaar
  • Intriguing exhibits on ancient Indian culture and heritage
  • Traditional face-painting and henna
  • A fun-filled and educational children’s area
  • Continuous yoga and dance workshops
  • A questions and answers section

Kishore Ramiyengar Carnatic Bhajans

Kishore Ramiyengar is a trained Carnatic classical vocalist. He was born in Bangalore, India. He had musical lessons under tutelage of Vidvan D V Nagaraj , K G Ramaswamy and various other Gurus for the last 20 years.

He has performed at several stage shows, reality television shows, and cultural festivals across India, the UK, Europe, and Canada. He has received accolades from various musical personalities. He has been actively involved in cultural organizations in Montreal and Toronto. He is currently living in Montreal, working as an IT consultant and teaches Carnatic vocal for those interested in the art form.

 

Nrithyalaya Bharathanatyam Dance

The Nrithyalaya School of Indian Classical Dance was established in 1976 – teaching the South Indian classical dance style of Bharatha Natyam – in the Kalakshetra tradition. Its founder and director is Vasantha Krishnan who has had her training in Kerala, India, under Kalakshetra Vilasini of the RLV Academy of Fine Arts. With her original choreography, Vasantha Krishnan has set to the stage countless dance dramas and more than 80 arangetrams or graduation performances. In 2009, Vasantha was bestowed the title Nrithya Seva Mani, by the Aradhana Committee of the Cleveland Thyagarajah Festival, for her contribution to South Indian fine arts in North America, preserving the art of Bharatha Natyam in its traditional form.
Nrithyalaya has been a prominent contributor to the Montreal community of fine arts over the past decades. Her school’s dancers have performed across Montreal, North America and toured Southern India. Vasantha Krishnan’s performances and that of her troupe received resounding reviews from art critics in Southern India, praising the calibre, technique and emotional expression of the dancers.

Kushi and Isha Ray Odissi Dance

Kushi and Isha Ray are from Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Their family is originally from Jagannath Puri, Odisha, India. They began learning Odissi when they were five and six years old, respectively, in Jagannath Puri. Currently, they are students of the Nritya Sadhana Dance Academy in Columbia, Maryland. They have performed for a variety of events such as World Dance Day, Ratha Yatras, Melas, and more. They have actively been performing Odissi for the past 13 years. They have danced in many states across the USA such as Maryland, Washington D.C., Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Orleans, West Virginia, Georgia, Florida, and New York.

 

Akhila Sannapuri Kuchipudi Dance

Akhila Sannapuri is from Hyderabad, Telangana, India. She’s a professional Kuchipudi Classical Dancer with 18 years of learning experience and 4 years of teaching experience. She has performed more than 200 times on stage nationally and internationally. Her Gurus are Jwalamukhi Pinna Garu (Doordarshan “A” Grade Artist) and Chinta Ravi BalaKrishna Garu (Bismillah Khan Awardee). Under the guidance of Jwalamukhi Garu, she completed the Certificate Course in Kuchipudi Dance in the year 2016 at Potti SreeRamulu Telugu University, Nampally, Hyderabad-India. She completed a diploma course in Kuchipudi Dance in the year 2018 at Potti SreeRamulu Telugu University, Nampally, Hyderabad-India. Under the guidance both of her gurus and Pasumarthi Keshav Prasad Garu (Late), she completed a Master’s Degree (MA-Kuchipudi) in the year 2021 at Krishna University, Machilipatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India. She has participated in State and District Level Youth Festivals and achieved 1st place in Kuchipudi Dance, 2nd in Folk Dance. She performed folk dances like Lambaddi, Bathukamma Dances, and Dhimsa.

 

Anita Pandey Kathak Dance

Anita Pandey is a Toronto-based Kathak dancer and classical vocalist.  Her Kathak Guru is Smt. Urmila Sharma, disciple of Pandit Birju Maharaj of the Lucknow Gharana.  Anita is currently expanding her movement vocabulary under the mentorship of Kathak dancer, Tanveer Alam.

Anita has given solo performances at prestigious venues such as Theatre Rialto, Festival Orientalys, Festival du Monde Arabe, Rath Yatra, Kabir Center, Gesù in Montréal, Sanskritik Kendra in Allahabad, and Sampradaya Dance Creations as part of Tanveer Alam’s group in Toronto to name a few.

In 2019 Anita placed first in the Sangeet Natak Akademi state level competition in Uttar Pradesh. She was honoured with a plaque from the India-Canada Association of Montreal, as well as with a trophy from the Handia Mati Mahautsav in Allahabad.

Devoted to dance education, Anita has lectured on Kathak at McGill University, Cammac Music Centre, PROMIS etc. She is also a Kathak instructor with Dance N’ Culture Inc. Her core role as a teacher is at her school: Anita Dance and Music Academy where she grooms new dancers for the stage, in-person and online, within and outside of Canada.

Anita is validated and supported by the Canada Art Council and aims to increase the visibility of the Indian classical dance form in the west.

 

Anjana Srinivasan Carnatic Music

Drawing from her training in Carnatic and Western Classical Violin as well as Carnatic Vocal music, Anjana explores the world of music as a way to touch the soul through melody and emotion. She continues to receive guidance under her guru Smt Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi.  She is very active in the Indo-Canadian musical scene, performing regularly as a soloist, in groups, and as accompanist for vocal and dance performances. She has lent a Carnatic violin touch to many recordings by Canadian and Indo-Canadian artists of different musical styles.

 

Sainan Kandiah Carnatic Percussion Performance

Sri Sainan Kandiah has been immersed in the South Indian percussion art since the age of 9. He has learnt the Mridangam from Sri.Anand Prasad. He presented his mridangam arangetram in 2009. Since then, he has performed for a multitude of programs in the Montreal community and is continuing to expand his knowledge in Carnatic music and rhythm.

Ravi Dwivedi-Leng Tabla Performance

Ravi Dwivedi-Leng has been learning Tabla in Canada for about 17 years. He is a student of Prof. Shawn Mativetsky at McGill, a disciple of the late Pandit Sharda Sahai ji. Ravi also recently received guidance from Pt. Sanju Sahai ji.

Bader Soma Kirtan

Bader discovered kirtan in 2016. He then went on a six-month pilgrimage in India. Since 2018, Bader started performing kirtan often. On the 16th of April, 2022, Bader released his first kirtan album of original compositions entitled “Govinda’s Grace” in Montreal, in which he sang, played guitar, piano, and harmonium. He then went on a tour to share the album in Toronto, New York, and at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. Bader also organizes kirtan events, retreats, and festivals. The Kirtan Festival Celebration in Mascouche was attended by 250 people last year.
